•EFCC should be part of monitoring team, says Okorie
•Chidoka: APGA is adrift

National Chairman of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie and former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka has advised the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to abide by its promise to conduct the November 18 Anambra gubernatorial election with upgraded voter card reader.

The duo spoke when Okorie officially presented the certificate of return to Chidoka, certifying that he has been duly elected as the UPP 2017 governorship candidate in Anambra State in the primaries conducted on the August 19, 2017.

The ex-corps marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) was also presented with INEC’s form CF 001 and the nomination form from INEC which is form 4B 1.

Okorie recommended that based on past experiences, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), should be allowed to be part of the monitoring team to avert crisis.

According to him, “We have a candidate whose godfather is the Almighty God. The people of Anambra State demanded a clean person and we have given them. There is no other candidate that can boast of solid grassroots mandate than the person we are presenting to you today.

“I appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to comply with the promises they made to political party leaders, the promises they made to media chiefs, who were assembled differently. The promises they made to pro-democracy and donor agencies that the Anambra elections will be conducted with an upgraded voter card reader that will transmit results right from the polling unit to the central server. That was what was promised all of us. And it was demonstrated before us and we applauded it because for the first time the ordinary Nigerians, in Anambra State will indeed chose who their governor will be.

“Once that is done, we are home and ready. I wish to recommend if only for the Anambra election, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), should be part of the monitoring team. I say this because in 2013 in Anambra State, we saw people carrying sacks of money in naira close to polling stations and they were giving N5, 000 to vote for a particular political party. And when the attention of the police was drawn to the development, the police who were obviously been compromised said that they were invited to maintain law and order and not to chase people who were carrying money around. If EFCC is part of this election the past experience will not repeat itself.”

Chidoka also advised INEC to keep to its promise and allow the rule of law to take its course.

He vowed to unite the Igbo in particular and Nigeria in general if elected as the governor of Anambra State in the forthcoming election.

His words: “Anambra State is about to start a new beginning. No more shall Anambra people be voting for people who are sponsored by forces that are not the people contesting the election. No more will Anambra State be ruled by an ideologically vacuous and bankrupt party. The UPP have come to restore the low voice of the Igbo.

“APGA as a party have no position neither does the government of Anambra State on the agitation for Biafra by the Igbo. They have no position on the issue of restructuring of the country. They have worked with PDP and are willing to work with APC. APGA as a party is adrift and we want to send it to its final funeral. And the reason why we want to do that is we have to help Nigeria to re-channel Igbo anger and energy towards building a nation that works for everyone. I stand here to say any vote for UPP is a vote for a better future for Anambra State and Nigeria. If INEC does what the chairman have said and allows for the electronic transmission of results from all the polling unites in Anambra, I can tell you the influence of the money bags will be minimal. INEC should play by the rules.”
