Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has dissolved 21 out of the 23 local government councils in the state.
Degema and Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni local Government councils were not affected by the dissolution because elections were conducted into the two councils recently.
However, the tenure of the other council Chairmen expired yesterday.
Meanwhile, Amaechi has forwarded the names of the caretaker committee members to the state House of Assembly for screening.
The Assembly reconvened late yesterday (Saturday) to screen the nominees who are expected to serve in the 21 local government councils of the state for a period of three months.
Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Otelemagba Dan-Amachree, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that the House sat on Saturday to enable lawmakers screen the local government caretaker committee members.
He said: “We had to sit on Saturday to enable us screen the caretaker committee members. You are aware that their tenure expired yesterday.
“So in other not to create a vacuum, we had to reconvene on Saturday to screen the caretaker nominees,” Dan-Amachree said.
Four local Government Chairmen were retained in the new caretaker committees which have seven members each across the 21 local Government Councils.
